Usernames

Minethings usernames are not case sensitive. Therefore, there can only be one user called "RedTrev" on Minethings, regardless of the formatting used. That is, there can not be a user called "REDtrev" or "ReDtReV". The same applies to the IRC server. For this reason it is important to register your username on the IRC server the first time you login.

Once connected (use the link in the Navigation menu to the left of this page), enter your Minethings username in the field labelled "Change nick to" and press <enter>.

Assuming that nobody has already registered that username, the IRC server will accept it and change the user list on the right hand side of the chat window accordingly.

To secure your username for exclusive use, you will need to password protect it. In the text box, type:

 /ns register password your_email@address

An e-mail will be sent with a confirmation code and instructions. Follow those instructions to complete the action.

Inline Commands

AWAY

Sets your online status to "Away".

Syntax:

 AWAY reason

(Sets you Away with the reason given)

 AWAY

(Un-Sets you as Away)

Example:

 /AWAY Lunch time for me!

Notes:

On entering this command, nothing obvious will happen. However, anyone querying your username will see that your status is now Away with the reason given.

DCCALLOW

You may allow DCCs of files which are otherwise blocked by the IRC server by specifying a DCC allow for the user you want to receive files from.

Syntax

 DCCALLOW [<+|->nick[,<+|->nick, ...]]

Allow or disallow specified users specified by nick

 DCCALLOW list

Will list the users currently on your dcc allow list.

 DCCALLOW help

Give concise guidance on the DCCALLOW command

Example

To allow the user RedTrev to send you file.exe, you would type:

 /DCCALLOW +RedTrev

RedTrev would then be able to send you files. RedTrev will have to resend the file if the server gave him an error message before you added him to your allow list.

 /DCCALLOW -RedTrev

Will do the exact opposite, removing him from your dcc allow list.

Notes

Use with extreme care. Virus's can be transmitted in many file types, not just .exe files. Make sure that you trust the user you are allowing and, for safety's sake, disallow them once the file has been received.

JOIN

Used to enter one or more channels on an IRC server. All occupants of the channel will be notified of your arrival. JOIN with 0 as a parameter makes you Part all channels.

If you specify one or more keys, they will be used to join a +k channel

Syntax:

 JOIN <chan>,<chan2>,<chan3> <key1>,<key2>,<key3>
 JOIN 0

(Parts all channels)

Example:

 /JOIN #Minethings

Notes:

If you are unexpectedly disconnected from chat, or kicked (naughty, naughty), you can use this command to reconnect without having to re-access the chat application. Your Nick will remain the same.(Verification needed)

KICK

Removes a user from a channel. Can only be used by Operators or Half-Ops. If no reason is specified, your nickname becomes the reason.

Syntax:

 KICK <channel> <user> [reason]

Example:

 /KICK #Minethings RedTrev Pretentiousness...

NICK

Changes your "Online Identity" on a server. All those in the channel you are in will be alerted of your nickname change.

Syntax:

 NICK <new nickname>

Example:

 /NICK RedderTrevor

Notes: If you change your nick to one that is password protected, you have around twenty seconds to identify yourself using the password. Failing to do so will revert you to your previous nickname.

PART

Used to part (or leave) a channel you currently occupy. All those in the channel will be notified of your departure. If you specify a reason it will be displayed to the users on the channel

Syntax:

 PART <chan>,<chan2>,<chan3>,<chan4> <reason>

Example:

/PART #Minethings Bye guys, been fun!

PRIVMSG

Send a private message to a user.

Syntax:

 PRIVMSG <nick> <text>

Send a private message.

Example:

/PRIVMSG RedtRev Why are you so awesome?

Multiple targets are also supported, like:

/PRIVMSG Manifest,Adagiorgasm,Japhet Can you kick RedTrev, he's so pretentious.

Notes:

A similar (and easier) way of sending a private message is to double click on the nickname in the user list pane.

Other Channels

There are other channels on the server used by Minethings chat. You can view a list of these by clicking the channels button above the main chat window.

Once connected to the server, you can join any of these channels by using the Join command. Note that your nickname is server dependant, not channel dependant, so you do not have to re-validate it on another channel. Some channels you may be interested in are:
